Guest rockstone1 Posted June 26, 2004 Report Posted June 26, 2004 :( hi folks can anyone advise i have a 1996 2.0lt galaxy with 60k on the clock , the head gasket has gone and the garage also advise that the cylinder head should be replaced also ,so i am looking at 1900 big ones, should i think about a replacement engine or go for the repair . thanks Quote
Guest nimrod Posted June 26, 2004 Report Posted June 26, 2004 Have the garage removed the head already? if not how can they tell that it needs replacing? I have blown three head gaskets in my lifetime and never needed to replace the head! I've had a couple of them skimmed but not replaced Quote
Topbloke Posted June 26, 2004 Report Posted June 26, 2004 Has the garage said exactly what is wrong with the head, is it twisted or has it corroded / cracked if it has twised/warped by how much, you could speak to a local machine shop to see how much to rework it or they may exchange it much the same if its cracked they can machine it, fill with new and then remachine it. don't just accept what they say unless you trust them implicitly, you could pick up an engine from a accident damaged vehicle but its a bit hit and miss on the quality you would get some type of warranty with it but not long, may be worth a call to some breakers to see what the availability is and price.interpart are a fairly good company they are on the net find there page fill in the online form and they will contact you if and when they have the part in stock Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted June 26, 2004 Report Posted June 26, 2004 In any event 1900 "big ones" is too much - go to Environ's website, the "official" Ford breakers and they'll sell you a used engine for far less.Sorry, don't have the link or www for them at present and a search hasn't thrown it up - it's on the other computer. hampstead Posted June 27, 2004 Report Posted June 27, 2004 This is the link Ivor mentions: http://www.environcarsales.co.uk/ A used 2.0 litre goes for Quote
Guest T120 Posted June 27, 2004 Report Posted June 27, 2004 Hi All Better put this link on the A/C thread as an air con comp; is only Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted June 27, 2004 Report Posted June 27, 2004 Back to topic - where has the gasket gone - between waterways and cylinders, waterways and external or somewhere else? Surely the garage must have the diagnosis results that lead them to conclude that it's head gasket. If it's only blown recently and the engine hasn't got too hot, then you should just need a new gasket although it may be wise to get the head skimmed just to be sure. These do not invovle taking the engine out of the car and so should be relatively inexpensive, certainly under a grand (and should be well under half that). Will depend on what is found when the engine is stripped down, assuming that the gasket really has gone. Do you have any more news on the fault yet? Quote
Guest Andy Posted June 27, 2004 Report Posted June 27, 2004 take it to someone who does not want the deed papers to your house.what is there basis for replacing the head,i would seek a second opinion.... :( :( :( Quote
Guest rockstone1 Posted July 15, 2004 Report Posted July 15, 2004 <_< thanks to the members who gave me some great advice regarding my galaxy . Any idea where i could get a pair of the new type sharan mirrors my mrs is always killing the ford types we are on our fourth set in 4 years heeeelp . Quote
Guest nimrod Posted July 15, 2004 Report Posted July 15, 2004 Do you mean the latest type with the indicator built into it or just new ones full stop? you could try eurocarparts or try a breakers yard, the one I use has a few Galaxy's, Alhambra's and Sharan's in stock! I quite fancy the mirrors off the Alhambra as they are the self folding ones! And how did you get on with the repairs? new engine or........? Quote
Guest rockstone1 Posted July 15, 2004 Report Posted July 15, 2004 i can breath again just the head gasket needed doing but i also need to get the mot done and a service , as well as replace the reverse light switch as for the mirrors the fold in type would be nice . thanks again <_< Quote
